What is Mirena used for?

By: Katie Tooma, Esq.

Mirena (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system) is a hormone-releasing system placed, by a health care provicer, in a woman’s uterus to prevent pregnancy for as long as the woman wants for up to 5 years. Mirena is also used to treat heavy periods in women who choose intrauterine contraception.
